Malawi is endowed with vast mineral resources, many of which are essential to modern industries, including renewable energy, electronics, and construction. The country’s mineral wealth presents significant opportunities for investment and economic growth.
Key Mineral Resources
Rare Earth Elements (REEs)
Found in Kangankunde and Songwe Hill, rare earth minerals are crucial for high-tech industries, including electric vehicles, wind turbines, and electronics. Companies like Lindian Resources and Mkango Resources are investing in REE extraction to position Malawi as a global supplier.
Uranium
Kayelekera Uranium Mine in Karonga was previously one of the world’s leading uranium producers. MAMICO is working on reviving uranium production to meet growing global demand for nuclear energy.
Gold
Gold deposits have been identified in Mangochi, Neno, and Lisungwe, attracting interest from artisanal and large-scale miners. Government efforts are focused on formalizing the gold sector to ensure revenue generation and environmental sustainability.
Graphite
Found in areas such as Kasiya, graphite is a key material for lithium-ion batteries, used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. The Kasiya Rutile-Graphite Project is expected to make Malawi a major producer of high-quality graphite.
Rutile and Heavy Mineral Sands
Found in the Tengani Heavy Mineral Sands Project, rutile is used in titanium dioxide pigments, essential for paints, plastics, and paper. The Kasiya deposit is among the world’s largest undeveloped rutile resources.
Niobium and Tantalum
Kanyika Niobium Project is focused on producing niobium and tantalum, which are used in steel production and electronic components. This project has attracted international offtake agreements, highlighting its economic potential.
Bauxite and Aluminum
Deposits found in Mulanje Mountain could support the production of aluminum, a critical material in construction and transportation.
Coal and Energy Minerals
Coal reserves in Livingstonia and Mwabvi have historically been used for power generation and industrial applications. As Malawi shifts towards cleaner energy sources, MAMICO is looking at responsible coal mining strategies.
